The McDonald’s Food for Thoughts offer changed on 22 May 2026. Surveys finished on or after that date earn a free medium fries, Cheeseburger, Oreo McFlurry or Smarties McFlurry with a £5 order.
Before that, the same receipt survey earned a meal for £2.99. This post covers both rewards side by side, what happened to vouchers already in people’s inboxes, and who comes out ahead.
Quick answer. The date that counts is the day you finished the survey, not the day you ate or the day you redeem. Full survey steps are on our McDFoodForThoughts survey guide.
When did the McDonald’s survey reward change?
The switch landed on 22 May 2026. McDonald’s UK terms split the reward by survey date, so anything completed before 22 May earned the £2.99 meal and anything after earns a free item.
- Before 22 May 2026
Survey earns a £2.99 meal. Pick one main plus medium fries or a Side Salad.
- 20 May 2026
UK news sites warn readers they have one day left to grab the £2.99 deal.
- 22 May 2026 onward
Survey earns one free item, priced at £0.00, when the order is £5 or more.
Some reports said 21 May. The official terms use 22 May as the cut-off, so that’s the date to trust if the two disagree.
Old £2.99 meal vs the new free item
The old reward was a cheap meal on its own. The new one is a free add-on that only works on top of a normal order.
| What changed | Before 22 May 2026 | From 22 May 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Items | 6 Chicken McNuggets, Big Mac, Filet-o-Fish, McChicken Sandwich, Quarter Pounder with Cheese or McPlant, plus medium fries or Side Salad | Medium fries, Cheeseburger, Oreo McFlurry or Smarties McFlurry |
| You pay for the reward | £2.99 | £0.00 |
| Other spend needed | None | £5 or more |
| Works on McDelivery | No | No |

Who wins and who loses from the change?
It depends on how you used the survey. I’d call it a loss for bargain hunters and a small win for regular customers.
Worse for you if
You only went in for the £2.99 meal. You now have to spend £5 first, and the reward is a side or a dessert rather than a main.
Better for you if
You already spend a fiver per visit. The McFlurry or fries is free on top, where the old deal still cost you £2.99.
McDonald’s described the scheme as giving “great value in return for customers’ time and opinions.” Whether the new version still feels like great value depends on which group you’re in.
Do old £2.99 Food for Thoughts vouchers still work?
Only until the expiry date printed on them. A voucher from a survey done before 22 May keeps its £2.99 meal, but McDonald’s says it won’t extend an expired voucher.
One consumer writer reported his voucher ran to the end of the following month. If that pattern held, a May voucher would have run out around the end of June 2026. Check your own email for the exact date.
How to check which reward your voucher gives
Your email tells you. Look at the date you finished the survey and the wording in the voucher message, then match it to the right offer.
- Open the voucher email
Search your inbox for the McDonald’s Food for Thoughts email and open the one for the visit you rated.
- Note the survey date
Check the date the email arrived. It’s sent right after you finish the survey, so it shows which side of 22 May 2026 you fall on.
- Read the offer wording
A £2.99 meal voucher names the meal options. A newer voucher names the free item and the £5 minimum spend.
- Check the expiry date
Find the expiry printed on the voucher. Past that date the code won’t work, whichever offer it carries.
Will the Food for Thoughts offer change again?
Nobody outside McDonald’s knows. The reward has changed before, and the terms let McDonald’s update it, so treat any offer as current only until the terms page says otherwise.
We recheck the official terms page when we update this site. The review date at the top of each post shows when we last looked.

Frequently asked questions
Why did McDonald’s change the Food for Thoughts reward?
McDonald’s hasn’t given a detailed reason publicly. It confirmed the change and said the survey still gives value for customers’ time and opinions.
Can I still get a Big Mac meal from the survey?
Not from a survey finished on or after 22 May 2026. The current UK reward list is medium fries, Cheeseburger, Oreo McFlurry or Smarties McFlurry.
Is the Ireland offer changing the same way?
Yes, on the same date. Irish surveys moved from a €3.90 meal to a free item with a €6 spend, as our Ireland guide explains.
Can I do a new survey to get the old deal back?
No. Any survey completed now earns the current reward. The £2.99 meal is only on vouchers from surveys finished before 22 May 2026.
