To redeem a Food for Thoughts voucher, order £5 or more in a UK McDonald’s and enter the emailed code at a kiosk, give it to the crew at the till, or add the 16-digit code in the McDonald’s app.
The free item, a medium fries, Cheeseburger, Oreo McFlurry or Smarties McFlurry, then drops to £0.00. Haven’t got a voucher yet? Start with our mcdfoodforthoughts survey guide.
Before you order, check these four things
Most refused vouchers fail one of these. Thirty seconds of checking saves an awkward moment at the counter.
- The voucher hasn’t passed its printed expiry date
- Your order, not counting the free item, comes to £5 or more
- You’re ordering in the restaurant, not on McDelivery, Uber Eats or Just Eat
- The restaurant is serving the item, so not during breakfast for a Cheeseburger or fries
Pick how you want to redeem it
All three routes are named in McDonald’s UK terms. Tap a tab to see the steps for that one.
Redeeming at a self-order kiosk
Build your £5+ order first, then find the option for entering an offer or voucher code. Type the code from your email and the free item should appear at £0.00.
Kiosk screens get updated, so the button name can vary. If you can’t find it, a crew member can apply the code at the till instead.
Redeeming at the till
Tell the crew member you have a Food for Thoughts voucher before they total the order. Show the email on your phone or read out the code, and they enter it at the till.
This is the fallback that always exists. It’s also the easiest way to sort out a code the kiosk didn’t like.
Redeeming in the McDonald’s app
The UK terms say the 16-digit voucher code can be entered in the McDonald’s app. It’s still an in-restaurant offer, so it won’t work on a McDelivery order.
I can’t tell you exactly which screen holds the code box, because the app layout changes with updates. If a 12-digit code won’t go in, that’s expected. Use the kiosk or till.
Step-by-step redemption
Here’s the full order of play, whichever route you choose. Follow it top to bottom on your next visit.
- Check the voucher
Open the Food for Thoughts email and confirm the code and the expiry date before you leave home.
- Order at least £5
Add items worth £5 or more to your in-restaurant order, not counting the free item and not as an Extra Value Meal.
- Enter or show the code
Type the code at a kiosk, give it to a crew member at the till, or add the 16-digit code in the McDonald’s app.
- Pick your free item
Choose a medium fries, Cheeseburger, Oreo McFlurry or Smarties McFlurry. It should show at £0.00.
- Check before you pay
Look at the total before paying. If the free item isn’t at £0.00, ask the crew to apply the code again.
Can you redeem a Food for Thoughts voucher at the drive-thru?
Possibly, but check first. The UK terms talk about in-restaurant orders and exclude McDelivery without naming the drive-thru. Ireland’s terms do include drive-thru orders.
Mention the voucher at the speaker before you order. If they can’t take it there, you’ll know before you reach the window.
Why was my voucher refused?
A refusal almost always traces back to the terms. Match what the crew said to this table.
| What happened | Likely reason | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Order total too low | Under £5 before the free item | Add a drink or side to pass £5 |
| Wouldn’t go on a meal | Can’t be used toward an Extra Value Meal | Order items separately to reach £5 |
| Said it’s expired | Past the printed date | No fix; McDonald’s doesn’t extend them |
| Rejected in app | 12-digit code or a delivery order | Use the kiosk or till in the restaurant |
| Item unavailable | Breakfast menu or stock | Come back after breakfast, around 11am at most sites |
| Already used | One use per eligible customer | McDonald’s decision on this is final |
If you think it’s a genuine mistake, contact McDonald’s UK Customer Services with the voucher email and the restaurant you visited.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use two Food for Thoughts vouchers in one order?
The terms say the offer can’t be combined with other offers or promotions, and it’s one use per eligible customer. Expect one voucher per order at most.
Do I need to show the original receipt to redeem?
The terms only ask for the voucher code. Showing the receipt isn’t required, though keeping it helps if you need to contact McDonald’s later.
Can I get large fries instead of medium?
The voucher names medium fries. A bigger size isn’t covered, so ask the crew before assuming an upgrade is possible.
Does the voucher work at motorway or airport McDonald’s?
The UK terms don’t list excluded restaurants, but the offer is subject to availability. Ask at the counter if you’re at an unusual site.
