McDonald’s Food for Thoughts Ireland, rules and reward

Comparison of McDonald's Food for Thoughts in the UK and Ireland, showing £5 versus €6 minimum spend and code types

McDonald’s Food for Thoughts runs in the Republic of Ireland too. Finish the survey and you get a free medium fries, Cheeseburger, Oreo McFlurry or Smarties McFlurry when you spend €6 or more.

The survey site is the same mcdfoodforthoughts.com, but the Irish rules are different from the UK ones in three places: the spend, the code and the drive-thru. This post walks through them.

Not in Ireland? UK readers should use our McDFoodForThoughts UK survey guide instead, because the £5 rules there are different.

Who can take Food for Thoughts in Ireland?

Republic of Ireland residents aged 18 or over who have a McDonald’s receipt with a survey participation code. The survey has to be done within 60 days of getting that receipt.

Northern Ireland is part of the UK, so a receipt from Belfast or Derry falls under the UK terms and the £5 minimum, not the Irish €6 one. That’s my reading of the two terms pages, which split by UK and Republic of Ireland residency.

UK vs Ireland at a glance

Same survey idea, different small print. Here are the two countries next to each other.

Republic of Ireland

  • Free item with a €6+ purchase
  • 5-digit alphanumeric voucher code
  • Give the code to crew at the till
  • Drive-thru orders allowed
  • Old reward was a €3.90 meal

United Kingdom

  • Free item with a £5+ purchase
  • 12- or 16-digit voucher code
  • Kiosk, till or McDonald’s app
  • Terms say in-restaurant, no McDelivery
  • Old reward was a £2.99 meal

What do you get from the Irish survey now?

One free item from four, the same list as the UK. Surveys finished on or after 22 May 2026 earn a medium fries, Cheeseburger, Oreo McFlurry or Smarties McFlurry at €0.00 with a €6 single purchase.

Before 22 May the Irish reward was a Big Mac, Filet-o-Fish or Vegetable Deluxe with medium fries or a Side Salad for €3.90. Those older vouchers only work until their printed expiry.

How to use Food for Thoughts in Ireland

The process is short. The main difference from the UK is at the very end, when you hand over the 5-digit code.

  1. Keep your receipt

Hold on to a McDonald’s Ireland receipt that has a survey participation code printed on it.

  2. Do the survey within 60 days

Go to www.mcdfoodforthoughts.com, enter the receipt code and answer the questions about your visit.

  3. Get the voucher email

Enter your email address at the end. The voucher with a 5-digit alphanumeric code is sent there.

  4. Spend €6 or more

On your next visit, order €6 or more in a single purchase, in the restaurant or at the drive-thru.

  5. Give the code at the till

Hand the 5-digit code to a crew member and ask them to enter it. Choose your free item.

Rules that apply in Irish restaurants

The Irish terms carry the same limits as the UK ones, with drive-thru as the exception that works in your favour.

  • Valid in restaurant and at the drive-thru, not on McDelivery
  • Can’t be combined with any other offer
  • Can’t be used toward or to pay for an Extra Value Meal
  • One use per customer, and McDonald’s decision on that is final
  • Subject to opening hours, serving times and availability

Breakfast is the trap I’d watch. A Cheeseburger, fries or McFlurry isn’t usually served on the breakfast menu, so a morning visit may not let you claim it.

If your code is refused, our voucher redemption guide has a table of the usual reasons. Most apply in Ireland too, apart from the app route.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Irish survey on a different website?

No. The Irish terms point to www.mcdfoodforthoughts.com, the same survey address used in the UK.

Can I use an Irish voucher in the UK?

The Irish offer is for Republic of Ireland residents and Irish restaurants. A UK till expects a UK code, so don’t count on it working across the border.

Does the €6 include the free item?

No. The free item costs €0.00, so the €6 has to come from the rest of your purchase.

Can I redeem the Irish voucher in the app?

The Irish terms describe giving the 5-digit code to crew at the till. They don’t mention the app, unlike the UK terms.
